Risk Control
Trading Hours Lock for Futures: Chicago Clock, Not Vibes
Updated 2026-09-27 ยท 7 min read ยท Informational / how-to
Quick answer
If your plan says "I only trade the first two hours of RTH" but your browser stays armed until midnight, you do not have a hours rule. You have a preference.

If your plan says "I only trade the first two hours of RTH" but your browser stays armed until midnight, you do not have a hours rule. You have a preference.
A trading-window lock turns the preference into page friction. You select weekdays and a Chicago open/close window. Optionally block full U.S. market holidays. Outside that window, the trading page is not a playground.
This is one of the highest-leverage personal rules in prop futures because the product itself never sleeps. CME hours and your discipline hours are not the same thing. Confusing them is how "I'll just watch Globex" becomes a trailing drawdown event.
Why hours rules fail without locks
Futures run nearly 24 hours. Prop traders still blow accounts in the hours they swore they would skip: thin overnight liquidity, post-close revenge, Sunday open FOMO, holiday chop, post-FOMC adrenaline when your plan said you were done.
The failure mode is always the same. You leave the platform open "to watch." Watching becomes hovering. Hovering becomes clicking. Clicking becomes a day that never should have existed on your personal calendar.
You do not need more motivation. You need the page to refuse you. Willpower lecture: willpower vs rules trading. Pillar: browser friction tilt control. Session reference: Chicago session times for prop traders.
What Trading-window lock does (verified 0.5.0)
Tilt Blocker's Trading-window lock:
- Uses selected weekdays
- Uses Chicago open/close times you configure
- Optionally enables full-day U.S. market-holiday blocking
It runs as browser friction on supported surfaces (Tradovate Trader, TopstepX, TradingView chart pages). It does not route orders. It does not invent a new exchange calendar for your firm โ you still follow firm news/holiday policies. This is personal page control aligned to the Chicago clock most U.S. index futures prop traders already think in.
Platform angle for TopstepX hours: TopstepX trading window rules. Multi-platform pillar: Tradovate Topstep TradingView tilt setup.
Designing a window that matches prop reality
Start from liquidity and your edge, not from maximal screen time. Many index futures prop traders focus on the Chicago RTH open and the first 90โ180 minutes. If that is you, lock the window to match โ then go do something else when it closes. "Being available" is not an edge.
Weekdays matter. If you do not trade Fridays into the close, do not leave Friday armed. If Sunday night is a known tilt slot, leave it off. Be honest about which days your journal shows damage, not which days Twitter is loud.
Holidays. Optional full-day U.S. market-holiday blocking exists because holiday sessions produce "just a little scalp" stories that end in drawdown. If holidays are chaos for you, enable the block. If your firm already restricts holiday trading, personal blocking still helps on the browser side when temptation tabs appear.
Align with Daily P&L lock. Hours lock stops the calendar leak. P&L lock stops the number leak: daily P&L lock prop traders. Hitting a P&L lock and then waiting around until a new session "feels like a reset" is a classic cheat โ window lock reduces that cheat surface.
Align with Settings lock. After first execution, settings frozen for the Chicago trade date: settings lock after first trade. Combined with hours, you get fewer mid-evening "strategy improvements."
Open pause vs hours lock
Do not confuse them.
Use both if your blowups cluster at the open and in off-plan hours. One is a speed bump at the bell. The other is the fence around the field.
Losing streaks and "extra hours"
After a losing streak, traders often add hours instead of subtracting risk. More screen time feels like work. It is usually exposure dressed as diligence. Read tilt after losing streak futures and revenge trading after a loss. Pair with post-loss trading routine.
Second-bad-trade framing: second bad trade prop firm. Overtrading: overtrading checklist for funded traders. Checklist aggregator: funded account protection checklist. Green giveback often lives in extra afternoon hours: green day giveback prevention.
Multi-device and profile reality
Protection settings can sync across licensed Chrome installs. Active daily lock state stays local per Chrome profile. If you keep a laptop "just for charts" at night, either leave the window locked or do not keep a trade-capable profile open. See multi-monitor Chrome tilt blocker.
A hours rule that exists on your desktop but not on your travel laptop is not a rule. It is a loophole with a suitcase.
Related blockers and guides
Globex is not free edge
Overnight sessions can be tradeable for some pros. For many prop traders they are a boredom market with sharp moves and thinner forgiveness. If your funded blowups cluster outside RTH, the fix is not a new indicator pack. It is a closed window.
Early closes and holidays
Exchange early closes and holidays create "almost RTH" sessions that feel like shortcuts. Optional full-day U.S. market-holiday blocking is for traders who know they do not have an edge there. Still follow firm holiday/news policies โ browser blocking is personal, not a compliance engine.
Travel and timezone traps
Flying across timezones is how people accidentally trade an extra hour. Keep the plan labeled in Chicago time. Sync settings to the travel laptop before you leave, and do not keep an unlocked profile "for charts only" unless it truly cannot trade.
Building the rule with your broker tabs closed
Write your hours rule on paper before you open Chrome. Include weekdays, CT start, CT end, and holiday posture. Only then translate it into Trading-window lock. If you configure while staring at a live chart, you will bargain.
After 10 sessions, compare planned window vs actual clicks. If clicks leak past the window, you have a profile loophole or a disable habit โ not a "market regime" problem.
Pairing window lock with streak management
Losing streaks beg for extra hours. Pre-commit: when you are down X days, the window shrinks automatically (you reconfigure on Sunday, not Tuesday night). Document that shrink rule next to the lock settings so streak-you cannot claim ignorance.
Case pattern: the "harmless" evening scalp
Composite desk story: trader nails RTH process with locks, then leaves Tradovate open to "study" Globex. One scalp. Then three. Then a trailing drawdown email. The fix that stuck was not a new Globex strategy โ it was Trading-window lock that included evenings off, plus closing the trade-capable profile after the window.
If your journal has evening footprints, stop debating strategy content for those hours. Close the hours.

Session template
- Choose the weekdays and Chicago open/close you actually trade.
- Turn on Trading-window lock, and decide whether full U.S. market holidays are blocked.
- Close the trade-capable profile when the window ends instead of leaving it open to watch.
Mistakes to avoid
- Leaving Tradovate open after your window "just to study" Globex.
- Configuring the window while a live chart is in front of you.
- Treating a holiday or evening session as free edge because the firm still allows it.
